Overview

The Rune of Punishment is a True Rune which governs atonement and forgiveness. Somewhat parasitic in nature, it is unlike the other true runes in that the Rune of Punishment feeds off the energies of its host, often until death. The cost of using this highly powered rune is the bearer's life, which is drained by the rune in return for its power. If the bearer's life is completely drained by the rune, he or she will turn to ashes and the rune attaches to a nearby host.

It is believed that this rune may grant agelessness similar to the other true runes, but there has never been proof of that due to the rune's highly fatal nature.

History

As one may guess, such a cursed rune has a long and varied history. For some time the Rune was sealed in the Obel Ruins when an unknown bearer died with no potential host close enough for the Rune of Punishment to jump to. However, this was not to last for when the Queen of Obel went into the ruins one day, the rune attached itself onto her left hand after its long sleep. The Queen resisted using the rune until a pirate raid on the island placed her kingdom and her family in danger. Seeing no other choice, she used the rune, dispatching the pirates but turning to ash in the process. This began the long run of misery as the rune jumped from bearer to bearer, destroying many of its bearers who dared to use its power.

Eventually the rune came into the possession of the trader, Graham Cray. Cray, desperate to escape the Rune's curse, severed his own left arm. His drastic solution worked, but the end result was tragic, as it moved from Cray's amputated limb to his young son. Cray's son managed to go without using the rune until the day a group of Scarlet Moon Nobles chose the Crays' Small Border Village to practice the "sport" they called Human Hunting. Cray's son unleashed the power of the rune, killing the Scarlet Moon aristocrats, but also himself in the process.

The rune was next seen back in the Island Nations, where it attached itself to a young fisherman who happened to be within its range. The fisherman, Rakgi's Father, left his family, meeting his end on the high seas before passing the Rune of Punishment to the pirate Steele. Steele, an already eccentric and cruel man, began to wreak havoc and fear upon the seas, plundering and destroying ships with his newly acquired rune.

However, he too met his end at the hands of Brandeau and Edgar, but not before the Rune killed Edgar, leaving Brandeau as its unlucky host. Brandeau isolated himself from his friends, sending Edgar's casket back to Edgar's lover Kika through the sea. With the exception of Peck, he used only strangers as his crewmen so that he did not grow too attached, knowing eventually the rune would claim him. Ultimately, his life was lost to the rune when he attempted to use it on a botched raiding mission against a Gaien Knights vessel.

Glen Cott, the commander of the Gaien Knights of Razril, happened to step into the trajectory of the Rune of Punishment as Brandeau passed on, and the rune immediately leapt unto him. Glen returned home to the island of Razril, but did not hold the rune long, as an invading fleet attack forced Glen to use it. He did his best to isolate himself from others, but inadvertently, two boys, Lazlo and Snowe happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Using up the last of his life-force to defeat the fleet, all three watched in horror as the rune transferred itself from a dying Glen to Lazlo.

Blamed for the death of the commander, Lazlo was exiled, forced to wander the seas. However, after a chance run-in with a Kooluk boat that saw Lazlo and his crew mates narrowly escaping with their lives and a rescue from a desert island by Obel forces, Lazlo would become part of the war to stop Kooluk from expanding southwards. Working first with Lino En Kuldes, the young True Rune bearer would eventually become the commander of the entire force. After gathering all 108 Stars of Destiny, the Rune of Punishment entered its rare 'forgiveness phase', no longer actively sapping the life of its bearer.

Following the war, Lazlo worked under Lino En Kuldes and was given small, easy tasks such as patrolling the borders and such. He eventually headed to the Deserted Island for a time where he later met Kyril who had been sent to the island by Lino in order to request Lazlo's help in his infiltration of Kooluk. Some time later it was revealed that Lino was planning to appoint Lazlo as heir to the Kingdom of Obel, however Lazlo had vanished from public life and had chosen a life of seclusion, knowing that, should he ever die, the painful cycle would begin once more.

Trivia

  • If every Rune is capable of transforming into an Incarnation, perhaps the angelic figure who is present during the final spell, Everlasting Mercy, is some kind of indication what the Punishment Incarnation would resemble.
