Hugo (Suikoden III)

Hugo (ヒューゴ) is a primary protagonist from Suikoden III. Member and current chief of the Karaya Clan in the Grassland, Hugo is, according to the Suikoden III manga, the current Flame Champion as well as the bearer of the True Fire Rune.

Biography

The only child of Lucia, the chief of the Karaya Clan, Hugo was born shortly after Lucia returned from the Highland Kingdom following the resolution of the Dunan Unification War. Hugo never knew his biological father, though Lucia once commented that her son had grown to resemble his father.

While Hugo was a young boy, the Karayan Village discovered a dead griffon in the forest. However,the griffon was not alone, and nearby the villagers found the griffon's young chick, now orphaned. They wasted no time in bringing it back to the village. Young Hugo quickly formed an attachment to the the young griffon, giving it the name of Fubar. Although Lucia planned on selling Fubar, Hugo was horrified at this prospect and released Fubar, taking him to the forest outside of the village and, in the forest, was attacked by Wolves. There, Fubar defended Hugo and proved his worth and was made a member of the Karayan clan.

As son of the clan chief, Hugo was invaluable as a political messenger on behalf of the Karaya clan and was ordered to deliver a truce agreement to the Zexen capital, Vinay del Zexay along with Sgt. Joe of the Duck Clan and his young friend, Lulu. Unfortunately, tragedy struck during that trip as the party was attacked and pursued by the Zexen Knights, though they managed to avoid capture by fleeing the city and Zexen territory via a secret underground passage. But when they returned home, they found the village in flames. Lulu, incensed by this destruction, attacked the leader of the Zexen Knights, Chris Lightfellow, but was immediately downed by her blade in one fatal blow. Hugo buried his best friend with the help of Sgt. Joe and Fubar and afterwards, the three sadly headed to the Great Hollow, where the Karayan refugees were now residing.

On the way, they stopped at the Duck Village, where Hugo ran into Lilly Pendragon and her two bodyguards, Samus and Reed, who were heading in the same direction. The two quickly brokered a deal to travel together. En route to the Great Hollow via one of it's secret passages, the group ran into the Masked Bishop's group; thankfully, they managed to avoid capture and reached the Great Hollow. There, Hugo told Luce of her son's death and Lucia expressed relief at finding Hugo to be safe and sound.

Investigating under orders from Jimba, Hugo traveled throughout the Grassland and even into Zexen before journeying to the Flame Champion's Hideaway, where he learned the truth of what had happened to the Flame Champion. Hugo then became the successor to the Flame Champion, vowing to protect the Grassland and receiving the True Fire Rune. With it, Hugo became the leader of the Fire Bringer, rallying the people and helping to protect the Grassland from Luc.

After the war, Hugo's leadership skills were again put to the test, as his mother retired from leadership of the Karaya clan, trusting her son to lead the Karaya Clan.
