Fubar (フーバー, Hoover) is a supporting character in Suikoden III. A griffin found and raised by Hugo, Fuber is currently helping Hugo in his job as Chief of the Karaya Clan, remaining a faithful mount and partner.

Biography

Fubar was found by Hugo when he was just a chick and raised him. However when Fubar was older, Lucia tried to sell him to a merchant. Greatly upset by this, Hugo freed Fubar from his cage, telling him not to return to the village. As soon as Fubar began to wander, however, his leg got caught in a bear trap and he screeched loudly enough for Hugo to hear and come rushing to his side. Unfortunately the two of them were spotted by wolves and were attacked. Hugo tried to fight them off, but to no avail. He told Fubar to run, but the griffin remembered his human companion's loyalty to him and fought back, saving Hugo from the wolves. Fubar returned to the village with the injured Hugo on his back. From that point onward Fubar was recognised as a Karayan warrior and accepted within the village; he has stayed by Hugo's side since.

When Hugo was delivering a message to the Zexen Council in Vinay del Zexay and almost taken hostage while staying there, Fubar swooped down to their rescue at the city gates, landing between Hugo's group and the Zexen Knight's pursuing them, thus allowing Hugo and his entourage time to mount Fubar and escape over the city walls. Fubar continued to serve Hugo as a faithful friend throughout Hugo's travels, eventually joining the Fire Bringer along with Hugo.

During his time in the Fire Bringer, Fubar seemed to get along well with Hallec as the two often shouted at each other in a bizarre display of camaraderie.. According to measurements apparently taken by Kidd, Fubar is 222 centimetres tall. His beak is considered his weak point and he eats meat exclusively. He lost to Bright in a competition to see who could jump the highest, though Bright acknowledged that Fubar was incredibly fast. He also spent time playing with Ruby and both competed to see who held the longest wingspan. Fubar also helped rid the warehouse of mice for Muto. It is rumoured that Fubar understands human language. Dios became fond of Fubar, who he remarked looked gentle and wished to touch, for the memory of it. Kidd noted that Fubar's feathers were fluffy and nice to touch, and scratched Fubar's head as a way of thanks for letting Kidd touch him. Jordi wrote letters on Fubar's behalf, telling Hugo that Fubar would always be there for him and noting that the children of Budehuc Castle liked to touch him, which Fuber didn't mind, but that he couldn't stand when they kept blabbering around him. Fubar also had other desires, wishing to eat a curry with horse meat in it. He also enjoyed brushing after a bath.

When Hugo became Flame Champion, Fubar did his best to assure him that he would stay be his side even if he had many more duties as leader of the Fire Bringer. Following the Second Fire Bringer War, Fubar returned to the restored Karaya Village with Hugo, continuing to be a faithful mount and partner.

Trivia

  • The term, "Fubar", is an abbreviation for "Fucked Up Beyond All Recognition", it dates back to around the time of WWII. Maybe that's what Fubar does to monsters? It certainly is a weird choice for a character's name.
  • Fubar is one of only two characters to have their height given in-game; the other is Bright.
  • Despite possessing the Shining Wind Rune, it does not cast the eponymous high-level wind magic, it's merely a wind blast attack at the expense of unbalancing oneself.
