27 True Runes

From Gensopedia

According to the Creation Myth, the 27 True Runes come from the gems that once adorned the Sword and Shield. When the two entities collided, the gems fell from the Sword and Shield and became the true runes. It is said that all runes are birthed from the True Runes. To date, 18 of these, or, 2/3 of them, have been revealed through the story or alluded to briefly.

Effects of the True Runes

The True Runes have abilities that extend far beyond those of their more common offspring. Often revered as the Gods of the Suikoden world, their power grants not only extraordinary magical abilities, but agelessness and immunity to disease as well. They, however, do not grant true invincibility, as the true rune bearer can still be killed by other people, as seen with the Sun Rune, or by the effects of the rune's power, with the Rune of Punishment.

The Will of the True Runes

Perhaps the most intriguing aspect that differentiates True Runes from their more common offspring, is their seemingly sentient nature. They are known to have wills of their own, often conflicting with the plans and desires of the Rune bearer. Some can show their bearers visions of both the past and possible futures, which can ultimately have a strong effect on bearers who lack strong will. Some True Runes can be removed, sealed or transferred via an unknown magical means (Soul Eater, any Elemental Runes), whereas others will remain on a bearer until the person dies, particularly the Rune of Punishment. True Runes are also capable of rejecting a host, something common runes are incapable of doing, this goes hand-in-hand with the sentient nature they hold. The Sun Rune, for instance, cannot be affixed to anyone who does not hold the title, "Queen of Falena." The Beast Rune is noted for having migrated on it's own from Harmonia to the Kingdom of Highland, for a reason known only to itself.
